About Us
I am the mother of three boys and taught all of them basic sign language as babies. Our third son was born with Down syndrome. We knew that speech would be much harder for him and that we would need to learn and teach more than just the basics. After trying it on our own, doing some research, and trying out products that we did not like, a friend told me about Signing Time. We started with just one video, and in just 3 weeks we saw our first sign from our little guy. He was 18 months old. The best part was, that while we did not intend for it to happen, about a year after we started the Signing Time videos, we learned that the videos were also teaching him how to sight read. At age 8 he could read as many word he could sign (which was well over 1000), and felt this was proof that this program works for kids of varying abilities. His teachers are amazed and are continuing with sign in the class room. In Kindergarten his teacher tested him on sight words, and he was proficient up to a third grade level. In my quest to find good books to sign during classes, another Signing Time Instructor introduced me to Barefoot Books. After just one look, I was instantly in love with the artwork, themes, and durability of these books.
